Types of Dental Emergencies We Treat
If you're asking whether your situation is an emergency — it probably is. Here are the most common dental emergencies we see and treat at Yap Family Dental.
Throbbing, relentless tooth pain that isn't relieved by over-the-counter medication is a signal something serious is happening — often infection, abscess, or deep decay. This will not resolve on its own.
⚠ Don't wait — infection can spreadA tooth that's completely knocked out can often be saved — but time is critical. You have the best chance of saving it within 30 to 60 minutes of the injury. Pick it up by the crown, rinse without scrubbing, and call us immediately.
⏱ Call within 30 min for best outcomeA broken tooth can expose sensitive nerves and create pathways for bacteria to reach the root. Even if there's no pain yet, a cracked tooth is an emergency — cracks spread and worsen under pressure.
🔒 Stop the crack from spreading — call nowA dental abscess is a bacterial infection forming a pocket of pus at the root of a tooth or in the gum. Symptoms include severe pain, swelling, fever, and a foul taste. This is a true medical emergency — the infection can spread to your jaw, neck, or bloodstream.
🚨 Life-threatening if untreated — call nowWhen a crown falls off or a filling comes out, the exposed tooth is vulnerable to bacteria, pressure, and pain. Temperature sensitivity often becomes immediate. We can re-cement or restore your crown or filling the same day.
✅ Fast, simple fix — same dayGums that are severely swollen, bleeding heavily, or accompanied by pain can signal advanced gum disease or a serious infection. Don't dismiss it as "just bleeding" — persistent gum bleeding warrants same-day attention.
⚠ May signal serious infectionCuts, punctures, or lacerations to the lips, cheeks, tongue, or gums from an accident or fall need prompt evaluation. If bleeding doesn't slow down with pressure within 10-15 minutes, call us or go to the emergency room.
🏥 Apply pressure — then call usSomething lodged between teeth that you cannot remove with floss can cause significant pressure, pain, and infection. Don't try sharp objects or probes — call us for safe same-day removal.
⛔ Don't use sharp objects — call usSkip the Emergency Room
Most Anaheim patients' first instinct is to drive to the ER. It feels like the safe call — but for dental emergencies, it usually makes things worse. ER doctors are trained for medical emergencies, not dentistry. They can reduce your pain temporarily but cannot fix the actual problem.
Note: Go to the ER if you have a broken jaw, severe uncontrolled bleeding, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or signs of anaphylaxis. For all other dental emergencies, call us first.
What to Do Right Now
Call us first — then follow these steps to protect the tooth and manage pain until you arrive at our Anaheim office.
Rinse with warm salt water. Take an over-the-counter pain reliever (ibuprofen works better than acetaminophen for dental pain). Do not place aspirin directly on the gum - it can cause burns. Call us immediately.
Pick it up by the crown only - never the root. Gently rinse with water, no scrubbing. Try to re-insert it in the socket. If not possible, keep it in a small container of cold milk or between your cheek and gum. Get to us within 30 minutes.
Rinse your mouth with warm water. If bleeding, apply gentle pressure with gauze. Avoid chewing on that side. If a fragment came off, save it in a small container of milk and bring it with you.
If you have the crown, keep it. You can temporarily re-seat it using dental cement (available at pharmacies) or even a small amount of toothpaste as a short-term hold. Do not use super glue. Call us to get it permanently replaced today.
Apply a cold compress to your cheek in 10-minute intervals to reduce swelling. Do not apply heat. Do not attempt to drain an abscess yourself. Take ibuprofen if tolerated. Abscesses spread rapidly - call us immediately.
Apply firm pressure with clean gauze or a damp tea bag (the tannic acid helps clotting) for 15 to 20 minutes. If bleeding doesn't slow significantly, call us or go to the ER. Do not rinse vigorously - it dislodges clots.

Common Questions
Yes. We do our very best to see emergency patients the same day they call. If you are in pain, call us at (714) 828-6684 right now and our team will work to fit you in immediately.

For most dental emergencies — toothache, broken tooth, lost crown, abscess — come to us first. ER doctors cannot treat dental problems; they can only mask the pain temporarily, and the wait is significantly longer and more expensive. The exception: go to the ER if you have a broken jaw, uncontrolled bleeding, or difficulty breathing or swallowing.
